Special Reports

TO NOMINATE A PERSON OR COMPANY FOR A FEATURE THAT ACCEPTS SUBMISSIONS, CLICK HERE.

40 Under 40

Company makers. Rule breakers. Risk takers. Industry shakers. Each year, Crain's spotlights 40 people putting an outsize mark on Chicago business and nonprofits, all before their 40th birthdays. 2020 nominations are closed but we are counting down the days to this years list reveal. The 2020 story publishes online on Nov. 6 and in print on Nov. 9, 2020.

The 2021 feature will publish Nov. 8, 2021. Nominations will open Nov. 6, 2020 and close in early summer.

Best Places To Work 2021

Partnering with Best Companies Group, Crain's surveys thousands of employees at Chicago-based companies to find the top places to work. The deadline to apply is Oct. 23, 2020. The story publishes April 12, 2021.

The Book (of leads and lists)

A one-stop download of Crain's exclusive lists and directories containing essential data and contacts for the companies. Also included is a "Contacts" file which contains more than 3,500 C-level, marketing, press and human resources contacts from all of the lists in a mail-merge ready format.

  • The Book 2020 publishes on Dec. 14, 2020.
  • The Book 2021 publishes on Dec.13, 2021.

Chicago's Most Innovative Companies

Compiled in partnership with Ocean Tomo, we evaluate the patents produced each year by local companies and rank them based on quality.

Coolest Offices

Chicago's most innovative, exciting workplaces are visually stunning, but they also prioritize flexibility, better ways to meet, views that are accessible to many rather than a few, and compelling reasons for employees to show up and work together (in person). In this contest, judged by local design professionals, we present a dozen or so of the area's best offices. 2021 submissions open soon. The story publishes Oct. 18.

Crain's Forum

From the pension crisis to gun violence, the city and state face a whole host of seemingly intractable problems. Crain's will continue to explore these issues in depth with the goal of respectfully and objectively raising the conversation, and in some cases, suggesting possible solutions.

Equity

A new yearlong multi-platform journalism project focused on solving longstanding issues around connecting diverse workers with good jobs. It will appear monthly beginning Nov. 2.

Fast 50

Our annual list of the fast-growing companies in the Chicago area. The 2021 application process opens soon. The 2021 list publishes June 14, 2021.

Notables

Crain's roundups of leaders making a difference in Chicago. From law to health care, in the LGBTQ community and the Gen X cohort, we've got the standout executives across the metropolitan area. Categories change each year so don't miss your chance to nominate. Nomination programs can be found here.

Privately held companies

Crain's exclusive ranking of the largest privately held companies in the Chicago area, based on revenue. The Excel version contains extra companies, hundreds more contacts and business descriptions and percentage changes in revenue from prior year. The list also includes local and worldwide employee headcounts.

Publicly traded companies

A comprehensive list of publicly traded companies based in the Chicago-area ranked by 2020 revenue.
