A Northwestern University spinout that created materials for implants that can be produced with a 3D printer has raised $3.2 million in seed funding.

Dimension Inx will use the funding to seek FDA approval for a synthetic bone implant material to be used in facial reconstructions, says Caralynn Nowinski Collens, CEO of Dimension Inx.

The company’s materials are made from calcium phosphate, which mimics the body’s own bones because it’s porous at the nanoscale level. Other 3D-printed products are more like ceramics and more difficult for tissue to attach to. The company’s products are based on biofabrication research by Ramille Shah and Adam Jakus at Northwestern.

The investment was led by KdT Ventures, as well as Better Ventures and Revolution Ventures’ Rise of the Rest fund. Chicago backers included Harvard Business School Alumni Angels of Chicago and Lofty Ventures.
