The Chicago Police Department can no longer afford complacency—nor should it tolerate resistance to the kind of change made glaringly necessary by the deaths of Laquan McDonald, whose violent end helped lead to the consent decree, and George Floyd, whose murder sparked a movement.

Business leaders understand there's still pain ahead for all of us. What they want to hear, however, is a plan for digging us out of the hole we're now in. Even better: They want—and deserve—a role in drafting that blueprint.

It's easy to get caught up in arguing about whose property tax bill is higher than whose, and why, and who's to blame for that, and more. But take a step back and recognize the underlying problem.

It's heartening to see public officials pull together on an infrastructure project that potentially carries such far-reaching economic benefits.
